Silica sand is sand rich in silicon dioxide (SiO₂), commonly present as quartz. Industrial buyers select it for a particular process, so the right purchase starts with your application and specification. Colour or a purity percentage alone cannot tell you whether a grade will work.
Match the sand to its application
Foundries use silica sand in mould and core systems. Chemical and industrial applications include silicate manufacturing, glass and ceramics. Construction buyers need grading appropriate for their concrete, mortar or plaster mix. Recreation buyers specify sand for a particular turf, bunker or court surface.
These uses share a raw material, but their acceptance criteria differ. A sand described as industrial grade is not automatically suitable for every industrial process. Send the intended use and the limits your process requires when making an enquiry.
Read the chemistry alongside the grade name
Ask for the silica content and the impurity limits relevant to your process, including iron oxide and alumina where applicable. Compare the actual analysis with your required limits, rather than relying on a description such as white sand or high purity.
Our product pages show indicative specifications. Confirm the agreed specification and certificate of analysis for your supply before treating a typical range as an order requirement. If your process requires a tighter limit, include it explicitly in your enquiry.
Specify grain size clearly
Request a sieve analysis or particle-size distribution. If you specify a mesh range, identify the sieve standard and aperture sizes used. If you specify millimetres or microns, include the acceptable proportion outside your target range.
Foundry enquiries may also use an AFS grain fineness number. Ask for the distribution as well as the reported number so you can compare the proposed material with your current specification. For a recreation surface or construction mix, use the grading requirements supplied by your project designer.
What does washed silica sand mean?
At Shiv Enterprise, washing is part of processing to remove clay, silt and unwanted fines. Grading then separates the material by size. Washed describes a processing step; it does not, by itself, specify the final chemistry, grain distribution or moisture condition.
Ask whether the quoted material is supplied wet or dried and how that condition will be recorded. Keep this consistent when comparing quotations from different suppliers.
